Although NSAIDs are the most effective treatment for persons who experience the pain of osteoarthritis (OA), the risk of adverse effects with NSAIDs may outweigh the benefits in many older patients. The GI risk is well known; increased attention has been paid recently to the cardiovascular risk. The goals of OA management are pain reduction and improvement or preservation of mobility. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment is recommended.

Weight loss may reduce the risk of knee OA, and increased levels of physical activity may result in improvements in disability-related outcomes. However, intensity of physical activity is not as important in weight loss as total energy expended.
The CDC and the Arthritis Foundation (AF) are spearheading a new initiative designed to reduce the effect of osteoarthritis (OA) on Americans. In response to the recommendations outlined in this action plan, the AF also is cooperating with the Ad Council and the American College of Rheumatology in sponsoring a national public awareness campaign for OA management and prevention.

Walking with short, quick steps results in a small but significant increase in metabolic cost that may be beneficial for weight reduction or maintenance in obese persons and reduce the risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA), according to researchers at the Biomechanics and Energy Metabolism Laboratories, University of Massachusetts Amherst
